Podcasting This Week

Here's a quick update, I have three new podcast episodes available this week that I want folks to be aware of.

First up is The GAR! Podcast, co-hosted with friend and partner Ray Cornwall. The GAR! Podcast is the Glenn Walker and Ray Cornwall weekly podcast where they talk unrehearsed about whatever happens to come to mind. It’s an audio-zine for your mind, a nerd exploration of a nerd world, coming to you from the suburbs of New Jersey and the sunny lakes of Florida via Skype.

In the latest episode, Prince Underground, we discuss our favorite performer, the late Prince, Purple Rain Deluxe, The Revolution, Susan Rogers, fandom, bootlegs, the Prince estate, The Black Album, drugs, baseball umbrellas, high price paraphernalia, listener feedback, Keith Pollard and Ron Wilson, and AI Alexa.

Then there's The Make Mine Magic Podcast, which I co-host with The Bride. The Make Mine Magic Podcast features Jenn and Glenn Walker talking about Disney, parks, movies, travel advice, characters, Marvel, Star Wars, Studio Ghibli, etc., if it’s Disney, it’s fair game.

This week’s episode includes discussion of "The Lion Guard," including the show, the characters, the origins, the actors, the music, crocodiles, zuka zama, lion super powers, Return of the Roar, "It’s Unbungalievable," the circle of life, and being a kid again. You can hear it right here.

Finally, there is the Nerdfect Strangers podcast that I co-host with partners Bobby Fisher and Jerry Whitworth Nerdfect Strangers is hosted by Bobby Fisher, who started it in August 2014 with original co-host and all-around nice guy/rock star, Jonathan Rodriguez. Since March 2015 the show has been hosted by Bobby and cool comics blogger, Jerry Whitworth, and, as of September 2015, Glenn Walker, who is also a real class act. We talk about all things nerdy and geeky including but not limited to: comics, wrestling, video games, nerd news, movies and TV.

In the latest episode, Exploding Windup Penguins, we talk about some of the San Diego Comic Con news, Glenn's distaste for blue M&Ms, and that snake, Randy "Macho Man" Savage turning heel and joining the dastardly NOW. We also talk about the disaster that was the main event of WWE Great Balls of Fire, and promote Noah Houlihan's Game the Gamer Kickstarter.

Avengers Assembled

If you're not tired of me talking about the Avengers, at the end of this post, you just might be.

I'm talking about the film Avengers: Age of Ultron in two places this week. First you can find me and The Bride discussing the film in the Disney-focused Make Mine Magic Podcast right here, and then if you want see me as well as hear me, I am joined by Biff Bam Pop! staffers J.P. Fallavollita, Jason Shayer, and Jim Knipp talking about the movie on the latest episode of the Biff Bam Popcast! that you can check out right here.

Of course you read my review of the film here, my hopes for it here, my reviews of the first Avengers movie then and now, and if you don't know who (or what) Ultron is, I tell you here.

And as sidebars to the film, my reviews of "Marvel's Agents of SHIELD" are here and "Marvel's Agent Carter" here. And if that's not enough, my reviews of Disney XD's animated series "Marvel's Avengers Assemble" are here. And if you want to discuss anything Avengers-related, check out the Avengers Forever group on Facebook here.

The Make Mine Magic Podcast

For a little over half a year now, The GAR! Podcast family has grown by one. The Make Mine Magic Podcast, unlike its sister production, is focused, planned and rehearsed and features myself and The Bride talking about all things Disney.

This week we’re talking about the Disney animated film Beauty and the Beast, but not in the traditional way. There have been many articles on BuzzFeed about what's wrong with the movie - unanswered questions, illogical plot holes and the like - so we decided to take on those questions ourselves. We even invoke Spider-Man and Sweeney Todd in our discussion. You can hear Episode 30 here, and find out what all the Beauty and the Beast hubbub is about.

Previous episodes include discussions of the Disney Princesses, the NJ DIS Meet Weekend, memories of Pleasure Island, special episodes on Pixar, the Pixar Theory, and even reviews of Muppets Most Wanted and Captain America The Winter Soldier.

You can find The Make Mine Magic Podcast on its own website here, on Facebook, and can also contact me or my co-host Jennifer Walker on Twitter.

PATTY & PETEY PONZIO VS. BROOKLYN FOOD BULLIES… ZZ TOP VS. FOOD BLOGGER JULIA SLUTWIG… MUST BE JELLY CAUSE JAM DON'T SHAKE… +2012 DUMPSTA AWARDS & HIGHLIGHTS!

Patty and Petey Ponzio never thought their homemade brand of family recipe, traditional, Italian dishes would fall out of favor in the heart of old South Philly. But the onslaught of one-word foodie empire gastropubs have eaten away at their business.

Daughter Francesca swears she can sell lots of her new rap record to pay off their debts in time for Christmas, but Brooklyn restauranteur, Kunthy Twat and her shallow banjo playing hubby, Dylan Douche, have the nerve and cash to gobble up all the businesses on Passyunk Avenue.

But wait! Is that Texan Blues rockers ZZ Top I see? What are they doing on Passyunk Avenue? And what does notorious Foodadelphia blogger, Julia Slutwig write in her make or break review of The Ponzio's restaurant?

Eat a hoagie, buy some pizzelles but don't burn down Palumbo's in - “PRISONER ON PASSYUNK AVENUE!”

A portion of proceeds from this event benefit, Philabundance, driving hunger from our communities.

Kit Kat Bits

I've been going to see the Dumpsta Players for most of the fifteen years they've been around. I just have to say that last night's performance of the Kit Kat Bric-A-Brac Broadway Revue was the best ever. And I've seen tons of Dumpsta shows. This was the best and my favorite.

DJ K-Tell and the gang kept it simple - candy bars singing Broadway tunes, and the bizarre juxtaposition worked so well. Elaborate costumes, all homemade, found or thrift bought (thus the Dumpsta name) highlighted the show which featured Broadway both old and new including songs from Oklahoma, Spring Awakening, West Side Story, Cabaret and even Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Coolness.

The Dumpsta Players return to Bob and Barbara's in April for the much anticipated 14th annual Promtrash!

Watching the Golden Girls Go Wild

For over twelve years the Dumpsta Players have been producing the best satire and commentary on pop culture and modern society with only costumes and props sometimes dragged literally from the dumpster. This lipsync-drag-cabaret theatre group is one of Philadelphia’s coolest secrets, they should really be getting press and acclaim. Here’s my two cents worth.

With any Dumpstas show there is one rule – nothing is sacred, and the corollary is to expect the unexpected. And that’s the way it’s been for over a decade, and continues this past Wednesday with their latest show “Golden Girls Gone Wild.”

Arriving early for a Dumpsta show is akin to those crazy old movies about Hollywood where a walk between studios one is witness to cowboys, chorus girls and cartoons. This is the atmosphere as a Dumpsta show is prepped in the last minutes before showtime. There were Golden Girls scurrying about as disco, both and old and new school, pumped through the bar’s speakers. Of course, there were a few oddities thrown in like Juice Newton’s “Queen of Hearts” and the “What’s Happening” TV theme. This is the Dumpstas after all.

After surviving a few liquor board inspections the staging area of Bob and Barbara’s (Dumpsta home field) is a bit different, but it gives ample room to strut and perform. And all drag queens (and kings) need room for that, and bottom line, biting sarcasm and political and pop culture satire aside, the Dumpstas are a one-of-a-kind drag show at their core.

Ricky Paul, the founder and driving force behind the group for well over a decade walks purposefully through the bar, saying hi to friends and patrons, but is hardcore in making sure all is ready for the 11 PM sharp showtime. While Ricky is always on top of the production, the shows are also always a team effort. From the oldest to the newest members of the troupe, to folks not in this particular show to even those who are sick or recovering from illness, all are on hand to make sure the show goes on without a hitch.

Tonight’s show are songs and sketches loosely connected by the premise of the Golden Girls on reality television, just a taste of what Dumpsta-mania is all about. Using actual sound bytes from the “Golden Girls” TV series, to get a new roof, the ladies hit the reality shows to raise money. The GG drag is priceless, and John Donges’ deep voiced Bea Arthur/Dorothy brought down the house. So funny I peed just a little bit.

When Dorothy goes on “The Biggest Loser” to Weird Al’s “Fat” I was losing it. I have officially seen enough butt crack to last a lifetime. Next Rose/Betty White, played by Carl Swansen, appeared on “Dancing with the Stars” as Heather Mills’ partner. Heather, Paul McCartney’s ex-wife, was played by a mannequin whose leg, um, well, you get the picture. As I said, nothing is sacred. This segment featured some amazing disco dancing by Ricky Paul as Steve Guttenberg and Jennifer Walker (nepotism is not dead) as Rula Lenska to “Shake Your Groove Thing.”

Choreography is a major part of any Dumpsta performance. Oh sure, you can say these shows are all just lipsync, but you can’t deny the incredible choreography involved. It is the troupe’s forte in many scenes on stage, and Blanche/Rue McClanahan (Lance Pawling) vs New York on “Charm School” is no exception. Great writing, acting and dancing here, and Shannon Wilkes as New York is terrific, and that’s not even mentioning Macy Gray’s “Slap a Bitch” or the fake vagina. Yep, you read that right, fake vagina.

Repeat after me: nothing is sacred, and expect the unexpected. And when Sophia/Estelle Getty, played by Dan Meyer, starts to strip on “America’s Top Model” (also hosted by New York) it’s madness. But it earns a check from Bret Michaels (Cathy Heard) of “Rock of Love” and everyone lives happily ever after to Warrant’s “Cherry Pie.”

The Dumpsta Players at Bob and Barbara’s – a Philadelphia tradition and a Philadelphia experience. Check the website and the MySpace for future performances. You won’t regret it.
